This Sunday’s tournament is a tribute to our late friend Ben Flahive.
Ben was a member of An Garda Siochana for over 25 years working as the Sargent in charge of the Garda juvenile diversion programme for Cork City and County. A native of Doneraile, much of his spare time was devoted to Douglas GAA Club.
Football was his passion, and in 2015 he trained Douglas Minors to their first Premier 1 Football title under the newly formed Rebel Og. He was also a selector with the Cork U15 Team and he trained Douglas to U21 success.
Ben was the first children’s officer in our club where he set up the data base for Garda vetting which was very successful in getting hundreds of members vetted within our club.
His two sons Kevin and Brian shared Ben’s love of football, Brian playing for all Cork underage teams until a serious back injury curtailed his playing ability and Kevin who plays for the Cork senior football team at present. Both boys are very proud of their dad and the legacy he has left to this club after his untimely death in Oct 2019.
We are all looking forward to our tournament on Sunday where 8 Under 14 teams will firstly celebrate a day of Gaelic Football and also compete for the Ben Flahive Cup and Shield.
It will be a great day to remind us all of the legacy Ben has left behind.
